What is a bulbous nose?
You look in the mirror. The tip of your nose doesn’t look like a thin line; on the contrary, it looks like a round and full ball. That’s what we call a “bulbous nose“.
A bulbous nose means a nose that doesn’t have a sharp, defined tip but rather a wide and rounded shape. From the front, you don’t see a thin line of light; instead, you see a thick mass. From the side, the nose may appear heavy or slightly droopy.
The good news is, there’s only one real way to permanently change this appearance: rhinoplasty. With rhinoplasty surgery in Istanbul, we offer a solution that corrects the roundness that has been bothering you for years, addressing the structure of your nose.
What causes a bulbous nose?
There is usually not just one, but several underlying causes of a bulbous nose:
- Genetics: Genetic factors are generally decisive in determining the shape and structure of the nose. This type of nasal structure may be observed in people whose family members have a bulbous nose.
- Ethnic background: In some communities, a bulbous nasal tip is more common, whilst in others, a hump on the bridge of the nose is more prevalent.
- Cartilage structure: If the two small pieces of cartilage that shape the tip of the nose are wide or set far apart, the tip appears round like a ball. For surgeons, this is the easiest cause to correct.
- Skin thickness: If the skin beneath the nose is thick, it conceals the underlying thin cartilaginous structure. Think of it as a thick covering concealing a sculpture. This is the most difficult cause to correct.
- Soft tissue: The fibrous fatty tissue between the cartilages contributes to an increase in volume in the nasal domes. This must be carefully reduced during surgery; otherwise, irregularities will form on the surface.
- Rhinophyma: This is seen in severe cases of rosacea. The skin thickens, reddens, and the tip of the nose swells like an onion. Treatment by a dermatologist is required first.
Ageing can also indirectly trigger this, as the tissues in the nose loosen over time; the tip of the nose may sag slightly or appear larger.
Who is a good candidate for bulbous nose job?
Anyone with an underdeveloped nose, good health, and realistic expectations is a suitable candidate. Age is a critical threshold here; it is generally not recommended for those under 18, as the nose is still developing during puberty.
Health status is just as important as age. There should be no underlying conditions that would hinder healing, and not smoking or being willing to quit makes a big difference. Candidates with good skin and bone structure generally achieve clearer results, as the surgery reshapes both the underlying cartilage and the overlying skin.
The best approach is to have a detailed consultation with an experienced surgeon to jointly assess individual suitability.
How to treat a bulbous nose in Turkey?
A bulbous nose can be treated in Istanbul, Turkey with tip rhinoplasty, full rhinoplasty, or selected non-surgical treatments, depending on its underlying cause.
Bulbous rhinoplasty
If the cause is genetic or cartilage structure, the solution is rhinoplasty. There are two options. If you are unhappy with your entire nose, classic rhinoplasty addresses the bridge, nostrils, and tip together. If only the tip is bothering you, rhino-tip surgery comes into play. This targets only the tip without touching the rest of the nose.
Tip rhinoplasty for a bulbous nose
If you are unhappy with the shape of your nasal tip, your surgeon will not cut off the tip, but reshape it. Think of it like a sculptor carving clay; the material is not removed, it is reshaped. The lower lateral cartilages (the two small supporting pieces that form the nasal tip) are brought closer together with fine sutures. The domes are narrowed, and the tip gains a more defined line.
Sometimes there is actually too much cartilage. In that case, the surgeon makes a conservative cut, leaving enough to hold the tip in place. Overly aggressive cutting can lead to narrowing of the nasal tip and breathing problems years later. Therefore, modern rhinoplasty prefers repositioning rather than cutting.
Non-surgical treatment for a bulbous nose
If you are hesitant about surgery, there is also a non-surgical option. The nasal tip can be temporarily made more balanced with filler injections. But this is not a permanent solution, think of it as a temporary trial. The result lasts 6-12 months, then a follow-up appointment is needed.
Rhinophyma treatment
If the cause is rhinophyma, a completely different approach should be taken. This is a skin condition seen in severe rosacea cases, requiring a dermatological rather than surgical start. First, rosacea is controlled with medication. In advanced cases, laser treatment or microdermabrasion (thinning of the upper layer of skin) may be necessary.
Recovery after bulbous nose rhinoplasty
Bulbous nose surgery takes 3–4 hours and is performed under general anaesthesia. A splint is worn for the first week; as the bones are not touched, there is minimal bruising.
Most people return to work within 1–2 weeks. Exercise can be resumed after four weeks, and contact sports after six weeks.
Swelling subsides within eight weeks, and visible results can be seen within 6 months. The tip of the nose takes on its final shape between 12 and 18 months.
How much does bulbous nose job cost in Turkey and the UK?
The cost of rhinoplasty varies significantly depending on the country and the scope of the procedure. In the UK, prices start from 7,000 pounds, whilst in Turkey this figure is generally lower, at around 2,200–5,800.
In Turkey, a clinic package does not cover just the operation; it is generally offered as a package deal and includes services such as accommodation, transfers and an interpreter. Consequently, combined with the favourable exchange rate, the total cost is significantly lower than in the UK.
The exact figure cannot be reduced to a single number. Does the procedure involve just the tip of the nose, or is it a full rhinoplasty? Is this a primary operation or a revision? The exact price will be clarified following a face-to-face consultation. You can view our price list page for rhinoplasty costs in Istanbul.
Bulbous nose rhinoplasty before and after
Before and after photos of rhinoplasty show you the potential, but they’re not a guarantee. Be sure to ask your surgeon for these photos during your consultation; it’s like seeing the clothes a tailor has made before – you’ll understand what you’ve got.

When looking at the photos, consider not only the shape but also the skin type. A result that looks striking on someone with thin skin won’t look the same on someone with thick skin. Ask yourself: “Does the nose in this before photo resemble mine in terms of skin quality?”
Timing is also an often overlooked detail. Most photos are taken 3-6 months after the surgery, when the tip of the nose appears thinnest. However, the result 12 months after rhinoplasty generally looks a bit softer and less sharp. For a realistic expectation, don’t forget to ask for photos of the later stages as well.
