Abdominoplasty
Everybody wants a flat stomach, but as we gain weight either though pregnancy or an unhealthy lifestyle, we can be left with excess skin once we lose that weight. Our skin loses its elasticity after significant weight loss leaving us with an overhang on our abdomen. An Abdominoplasty or Tummy Tuck is a popular surgical procedure for patients who wish to have a tight and flat stomach. In most cases, a Tummy Tuck is combined with VASER® Liposuction which can tone your body and give you a contoured figure by also removing fat from your abdomen, flanks and back.
What is a Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty)?
Tummy Tuck surgery also known as abdominoplasty involves removal of excess fat and skin from the abdominal area as well as tightening the muscles of the abdominal wall. It is a popular procedure among patients who want to improve the appearance of their abdomen after extreme weight loss and pregnancy. As a result of weight loss and giving birth the skin loses its elasticity and in some cases it can no longer return to its original form, which may leave the body with excess and saggy skin. A Tummy Tuck will not only help you regain your body and your confidence, but when combined with liposuction it will also give you a contoured waistline.
How is a Tummy Tuck Performed?
Full Tummy Tuck
In full tummy tuck surgery, two incisions are made to remove the excess skin and to create a new belly button. The first incision is made across the lower abdomen and a second incision is made around the navel. During full tummy tuck surgery, the abdominal wall is tightened with sutures and once the weakened muscles are repaired the excess skin is removed. The remaining skin is then pulled down and reattached together with a new opening for the belly button, which is pulled through the hole and sutured in place.
Mini Tummy Tuck
A mini tummy tuck on the other hand is used to remove the excess skin and fat in the lower abdomen when muscle repair is not necessary. Compared with a full tummy tuck, a smaller incision is made across the lower abdomen and the navel does not need to be repositioned. Once the incision is made, the excess skin is removed and the remaining skin is stitched together for a flatter and tighter stomach.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty)?
A Tummy Tuck involves removing excess skin from middle and lower abdomen and stretching of the skin and abdominal wall to give a sagginess-free and firm look.
Who is an ideal candidate for a Tummy Tuck?
Tummy Tuck procedure is popular with patients who have experienced dramatic weight loss and pregnancy and as a result suffer from excess skin. Both men and women can have this procedure and benefit from a firm and flat stomach.
What should I expect during my consultation with the surgeon?
During your consultation with the surgeon you will discuss your expectations and potential results. He will go through your medical history and test results with you to ensure your suitability for the procedure. After clearly explaining how a Tummy Tuck is performed, he will physically examine you and draw very detailed markings on your abdomen.
The markings will be unique to your body and they will define precisely where your surgeon is going to make an incision to ensure the scar will lie within the bikini line to make it less visible. You will then be given information about your post-op recovery and be prepared for your surgery.
Can Tummy Tuck be performed in combination with Liposuction?
Yes! A Tummy Tuck will not only help you regain your body and your confidence, but when combined with liposuction it will also give you a contoured waistline.
What’s the difference between a full and mini Tummy Tuck?
A full Tummy Tuck is a body contouring technique used to remove excess skin from both above the belly button and below the bikini line to improve the appearance of the abdomen. Full tummy tuck surgery includes muscle repair (diastasis recti) which is a very common in patients who’ve given birth.
Although a mini tummy tuck is very similar to a full abdominoplasty, it targets a much smaller area. Compared with a full tummy tuck a smaller incision is made across the lower abdomen and the navel does not need to be repositioned. A mini Tummy Tuck only addresses concerns on the lower abdomen, below the belly button and above the bikini line.
How will I know if I need a full or mini Tummy Tuck?
If you have excess fat, saggy skin above your belly button, or have lost a lot of weight and have a lot of excess skin, you’ll need a full tummy tuck.
A mini Tummy Tuck only addresses concerns below the belly button, so it’s ideal for patients at normal body weight and with only a small pouch. So, it’s not for everyone and whether you need a mini Tummy Tuck or a full Tummy Tuck will be determined based on your pictures, medical history and your physical consultation with your surgeon.
Will this procedure help me lose weight?
A Tummy Tuck is not a weight loss surgery. It is a surgical procedure performed to reshape your body by removing excess skin gained from pregnancy or dramatic weight loss. You will experience some loss of weight especially if your Tummy Tuck procedure is combined with Liposuction, but the primary goal is to remove the excess skin.
In order to maintain your results, you will need to ensure that you start eating healthy and exercise regularly to have the body you’ve always dreamed of!
How long will it take me to fully recover?
Full recovery from Tummy Tuck surgery usually takes between six and eight weeks during which you will have swelling and bruising. Your mobility will be restricted therefore we advise that you have a friend to accompany you during your recovery period in Istanbul.
Will a Tummy Tuck get rid of my stretch marks?
Tummy Tuck surgery involves removing excess skin and for some patients the appearance of stretch marks can be reduced if they are located on the excised skin which is usually below the belly button.
Will I be left with scars?
With a full tummy tuck the incision will be from hip to hip and it will be as low as possible so that the scar is concealed by your underwear.
A mini tummy tuck incision on the other hand will be even lower on the abdomen and it will be a little bigger than a C-Section scar.
When can I return to work?
It depends on the type of job that you do. Normally, you can return to work within 3 weeks if your job is sedentary. For more active jobs we recommend taking up to 4 weeks off work because you must avoid any strenuous activities in the first 6 weeks following Tummy Tuck surgery.
When can I expect to see my results?
Some patients may see results immediately, but most will start seeing their results 6-8 weeks after the procedure once the swelling has subsided. However, it can take up to 6 months to 1 year to achieve the final result.
Don’t forget that specific results cannot be guaranteed as every individual has different bodies therefore everyone’s results will vary.
When can I take a shower?
You can take a shower 3-4 days after your surgery after your drains are removed.
How long does the procedure take?
It takes around 3-4 hours depending on whether it’s combined with Liposuction procedure or not.
What type of anesthesia will be used?
Tummy Tuck surgery is performed under general anesthesia.
Do I have enough skin for a tummy tuck – abdominoplasty?
Having excess skin on your abdomen does not automatically mean that you are a candidate for a tummy tuck. For effective results, the procedure typically necessitates the removal of a sufficient amount of loose skin from your belly button to your pubic area. In order to determine your suitability for a tummy tuck, it is important to consult with a qualified plastic surgeon who can evaluate your specific situation and recommend the best course of action.
How close to your goal weight should you be before a tummy tuck?
It is generally recommended that you be within 10-15% of your target weight before your tummy tuck. Staying close to your target weight makes the results more predictable and long-lasting, as significant weight changes after the procedure can affect the outcome. Reaching a stable weight also reduces the risk of complications and helps to ensure a smoother recovery.
How soon can you have lipo after giving birth?
Surgeons typically advise waiting six months to a year after pregnancy before considering an abdominoplasty. This waiting period allows your body to fully recover, your hormones to stabilize, and your weight to return to a more consistent level.
Do I need a tummy tuck - abdominoplasty after losing weight?
Whether you need a tummy tuck after losing weight depends on the elasticity of your skin and how your body responds to weight loss. Some people have naturally firm skin, while others may experience sagging or loose skin in the abdominal area. If you have excess skin that doesn’t respond to exercise, a tummy tuck may be a good option for a smoother, tighter appearance. Consulting a plastic surgeon can help you with this.
