What is Male Breast Reduction (Gynecomastia)?
Gynecomastia or commonly referred to as man boobs is a condition in which males develop benignly enlarged breast glandular tissue and/or fat on their chest. The development of breast tissue can be caused by a hormonal imbalance or as a result of dramatic weight loss. Although it is not a health concern, Gynecomastia can be very distressing, causing men of all ages and fitness levels to have low self-esteem. It’s estimated that over 40% of the male population suffer from gynaecomastia and if you’re one of those men then get in touch with us for a free assessment by our expert surgeons.
How is Male Breast Reduction performed?
Male breast reduction involves the removal of excess fat and breast tissue by making a small incision around the nipple. Patients who only have fatty tissue without excess skin can be treated with Liposuction alone to smooth the chest area. If there is excess skin however, this will be removed by your surgeon for a more masculine look. The surgeon will decide which technique to use after a thorough physical consultation.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is Male Breast Reduction?
Gynecomastia or commonly referred to as “man boobs” is a condition in which males develop benignly enlarged breast glandular tissue and/or fat on their chest. It involves the removal of excess fat and breast tissue by making a small incision around the nipple for a flatter chest.
What should I expect during my consultation with the surgeon?
During your consultation with the surgeon you will discuss your expectations and potential results, giving you a chance to decide together what’s best for you and your frame. He will go through your medical history and test results with you to ensure your suitability for the procedure. After clearly explaining how Gynecomastia is performed and what type of scarring you will have, he will physically examine you and draw detailed markings on your chest. You will then be given information about your post-op recovery and be prepared for your surgery.
Is there an age limit for Gynecomastia?
While there is no specific age limit for Gynecomastia, you need to be over 18 to be a suitable candidate for this procedure.
When can I expect to return to work?
It depends on the type of job that you do. Normally, you can return to work within 10 days if your job is sedentary. For more active jobs we recommend taking up to 2 weeks off work because you must avoid any strenuous activities involving arm movement in the first 6 weeks following Gynecomastia surgery.
Will I be left with scars?
Male breast reduction involves the removal of excess fat and breast tissue by making a very small incision around the nipple. Most patients are concerned about post-operative scarring and although it will not completely disappear, the scar will gradually fade over time.
When can I expect to see my results?
Most patients will start seeing their results after three to six months as that’s how long it can take for your breasts to heal.
Don’t forget that specific results cannot be guaranteed as every individual has different bodies therefore everyone’s results will vary.
Should I bring a friend with me?
Our dedicated patient coordinators and nurses will be with you during every step of your journey. However, when having a surgical procedure anywhere it’s always best to have a familiar face with you.
When can I take a shower?
You can take a shower 2-3 days after surgery.
How long does the operation take?
It takes around 2 hours.
What type of anaesthesia will be used?
Gynecomastia surgery is performed under general anaesthesia.
