What’s DHI?
Direct Hair Implantation, also known as simply DHI is one of the most advanced hair transplantation techniques in the world. It involves removal of hair follicles from the donor area one by one using the Choi pen and implanting them directly into the target area, the bald or thinning part. During DHI, your surgeon will create the canals and implant the hair follicles simultaneously, increasing their survival rate by ensuring they only remain outside the body for a very short time.
The safe and painless Choi pen gives the surgeon more precision when implanting the follicles which allows him to control the angle, direction, and depth of the newly transplanted hair. Direct implantation of hair follicles provides a natural look as the transplanted hair will grow with the same characteristics making DHI a very popular technique.
DHI vs FUE
The main difference between DHI and FUE procedures is the the way that the grafts are implanted into the recipient area. During DHI surgery, the Choi pen allows the implantation stage to happen within 1-2 minutes after the hair follicles are extracted, without the need to first create the canals for the grafts. The FUE technique on the other hand requires opening the canals prior to implantation, to allow for the extracted grafts to be implanted manually.
While the graft extraction process is similar to FUE, the Choi pen helps to ensure that extractions are well-distributed to minimize the risk of scarring as much as possible. Despite their notable differences, both techniques have a very high success rate with both men and women who suffer from hair loss. Interested in undergoing a DHI or FUE hair transplant? Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between FUE Hair Transplant and DHI?
The main difference between DHI and FUE procedures is the the way that the grafts are implanted into the recipient area. During DHI surgery, the Choi pen allows the implantation stage to happen within 1-2 minutes after the hair follicles are extracted, without the need to first create the canals for the grafts. The FUE technique on the other hand requires opening the canals prior to implantation, to allow for the extracted grafts to be implanted manually.
Is DHI a painful procedure?
DHI is performed under local anesthesia so you will not feel any pain or discomfort during the procedure.
How long does a hair transplant procedure take?
The procedure can take anywhere from a couple hours to extract 1000 grafts to over 6-8 hours to extract 3000 to 4000 grafts.
When will I see the results?
You will start seeing the initial results only six months after surgery but it can take a year for you to see your final results. Hair follicles transferred to areas of loss will continue to grow for life.
Does hair grow back in the donor area?
Yes it does. A healthy scalp can show hair growth at the donor site within a few months.
Are the results from a hair transplant permanent?
DHI is a permanent solution for hair loss and you will start seeing the initial results only six months after surgery. For optimum results, we will provide you with instructions on aftercare, medication and shampoos following your procedure. You may still lose your own hair due to various factors such as genetics and smoking, therefore you might need another hair transplant in the future.
Will I lose any hair after my hair transplant?
Two to three weeks after your hair transplant procedure, you will experience shedding. It is completely normal to shed your transplanted hair following an FUE hair transplant.
When can I have a haircut after my procedure?
We usually advise patients to wait a month before cutting their hair. At this point, the grafts’ll be secure and you’ll be fully headed.
How many sessions will I need?
This depends on the size of the area that is being treated and your desired look, so you might need more than one session. Your surgeon will discuss with you what look you are aiming to achieve and on that basis give you an estimate on the number of grafts he’s able to transplant during your procedure.
Is there a recommended age for hair transplant?
Although there is not really age limit, the best candidates for a hair transplant are usually those over the age of 30. Younger patients will likely need additional treatment later on in life as hair loss will still continue naturally.
