Breast Reduction

Breast Reduction is an ideal procedure for both women and men whose breasts are naturally oversized

What is Breast Reduction?

Breast reduction also known as Mammoplasty is a surgical procedure designed to reduce the size and volume of breasts. Although many women desire to have large breasts, naturally very large breasts can cause discomfort or inconvenience for some. Breast Reduction procedure is ideal for both women and men whose breasts are naturally oversized or are not in proportion with the rest of their body. Large breasts can be caused by numerous factors including weight gain, childbirth and genetics. Breast reduction surgery is a very common procedure in the UK and it’s the only solution to reduce over-sized breasts.

Women with large breasts often suffer from physical and emotional discomfort, including low self-esteem. Breast reduction surgery not only enhances the appearance of breasts, but it also gives patients the confidence and freedom to participate in physical activities they would otherwise not be able to perform. It can also help eliminate the back, shoulder and neck pain that is often caused by large breasts. That’s why surgical breast reduction is a very popular treatment for women with large and sagging breasts.

How is Breast Reduction Performed?

A breast reduction involves the removal of excess fat, skin, and tissue from your breasts. In many cases, a breast uplift procedure is performed at the same time to reshape the breast and reposition the nipple and areola for more youthful results. Depending on the size of your breasts, your skin and your anatomy the technique used by your surgeon will either be an inverted T reduction or a vertical pattern reduction.

The most common type of breast reduction is an inverted T reduction, especially for reducing very large breasts or those with excess breast skin. Most patients are concerned about post-operative scarring and although it will not completely disappear, the scar will gradually fade over time.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Breast Reduction?

Breast reduction is a surgical procedure designed to reduce the size and volume of breasts. It involves the removal of excess fat, skin, and tissue from your breasts.

Am I a suitable candidate for a Breast Reduction?

If you suffer from physical and emotional discomfort, including low self-esteem due to your large breasts then Breast Reduction is the best option for you. Breast Reduction surgery not only enhances the appearance of breasts, but it also gives patients the confidence and freedom to participate in physical activities they would otherwise not be able to perform.

What should I expect during my consultation with the surgeon?

During your consultation with the surgeon you will discuss your expectations and potential results, giving you a chance to decide together what’s best for you and your frame. He will go through your medical history and test results with you to ensure your suitability for the procedure. After clearly explaining how a Breast Reduction is performed and what type of scarring you will have, he will physically examine you and draw detailed markings on your breasts. You will then be given information about your post-op recovery and be prepared for your surgery.

Can I breastfeed after Breast Reduction surgery?

Milk supply is less affected if the nipple and areola remain attached to the breast during surgery. Our surgeons use innovative techniques that preserve the function of the mammary glands, so it’s very likely that you’ll be able to breastfeed. This is not guaranteed however, as your results depend mainly on the size of your breasts and the length of the procedure. Your surgeon will explain the procedure to you in full detail.

When can I expect to return to work?

It depends on the type of job that you do. Normally, you can return to work within 14 days if your job is sedentary. For more active jobs we recommend taking up to 3 weeks off work because you must avoid any strenuous activities involving arm movement in the first 6 weeks following Breast Reduction surgery.

Will I be left with scars?

The most common type of Breast Reduction is an inverted T scar, especially for reducing large breasts or those with excess breast tissue. Most patients are concerned about post-operative scarring and although it will not completely disappear, the scar will gradually fade over time.

When can I expect to see my results?

Most patients will start seeing their results after three to six months as that’s how long it can take for your breasts to heal.

Don’t forget that specific results cannot be guaranteed as every individual has different bodies therefore everyone’s results will vary.

Should I bring a friend with me?

Our dedicated patient coordinators and nurses will be with you during every step of your journey. However, when having a surgical procedure anywhere it’s always best to have a familiar face with you especially during a Breast Reduction procedure as your arms might have limited mobility.

When can I take a shower?

You can take a shower 2-3 days after surgery.

How long does the operation take?

It takes around 2-3 hours.

What type of anaesthesia will be used?

Breast Reduction surgery is performed under general anaesthesia.

How long do I wear bra after breast reduction?

After breast reduction in Istanbul, you typically need to wear a surgical bra or a supportive sports bra continuously for the first two weeks.

Your surgeon will provide specific instructions about breast lift process, but generally, you may need to wear a bra day and night for the initial healing period.

How long does breast reduction surgery take to recover?

Breast reduction surgery recovery time varies, but most patients can expect to return to normal activities within 4 to 6 weeks.

In breast reduction treatment there may be swelling, bruising and discomfort at first, but it gradually improves over time. Following the post-operative care instructions provided by your surgeon will help facilitate a smooth recovery process.

Do breasts sag after reduction?

After breast reduction surgery breasts may still undergo some degree of sagging due to factors like aging and fluctuations in weight.

However, the extent of sagging is typically less than before the procedure, and the results of breast reduction surgery usually lead to improved shape and contour. Following post-operative care instructions, maintaining a stable weight, and wearing supportive bras can help minimize sagging and maintain the results of the surgery.
