What is Gastric Sleeve Surgery?
Gastric Sleeve, also called Sleeve Gastrectomy, is a surgical weight-loss procedure that has dramatically increased in popularity over the recent years. According to a National Bariatric Surgery Registry report, Gastric Sleeve is the second-most common weight loss surgery in the UK. On average, Gastric Sleeve surgery can help patients lose about 60-70% of their extra weight over a two-year period. Gastric Sleeve not only delivers excellent weight loss results, it also helps patients achieve an improved quality of life.
How is Gastric Sleeve Surgery Performed?
During Gastric Sleeve, about 80% of the stomach including, the source of hormones which stimulate your appetite is permanently removed. Once the size of your stomach is reduced significantly, the amount of food you can consume will be restricted, therefore leaving you feeling fuller sooner. This procedure is performed laparoscopically, which involves inserting small instruments through tiny incisions to remove part of your stomach, leaving the remainder in a sleeve-like shape. You can expect to lose around 30-50% of your excess weight in the first 12 months after your surgery with more weight loss expected over the following year.

- Heart disease
- High blood pressure
- High cholesterol
- Obstructive sleep apnoea
- Type 2 diabetes

Calculate Your BMI
BMI is a measure used by medical professionals to determine if your weight is healthy. A BMI of 25.0 or more is overweight, while the healthy range is 18.5 to 24.9. However, it is important to note that BMI is a simple calculation based on a person’s height and weight and it does not take into account muscle mass, bone density, overall body composition, and racial and sex differences.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is Gastric Sleeve?
Gastric Sleeve also called Sleeve gastrectomy, is a surgical weight-loss procedure. This procedure is typically performed laparoscopically, which involves inserting small instruments through multiple small incisions in the upper abdomen. During sleeve gastrectomy, about 80% of the stomach is removed, leaving a tube-shaped stomach about the size and shape of a banana.
Limiting the size of your stomach restricts the amount of food you are able to consume.
Done to help you lose excess weight and reduce your risk of potentially life-threatening weight-related health problems, including:
- Heart disease
- High blood pressure
- High cholesterol
- Obstructive sleep apnea
- Type 2 diabetes
- Stroke
- Cancer
- Infertility
Am I a suitable candidate for Gastric Sleeve?
Sleeve gastrectomy is typically done only after you’ve tried to lose weight by improving your diet and exercise habits.
In general, sleeve gastrectomy surgery could be an option for you if:
- Your body mass index (BMI) is 40 or higher (extreme obesity).
- Your BMI is 35 to 39.9 (obesity), and you have a serious weight-related health problem, such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure or severe sleep apnea. In some cases, you may qualify for certain types of weight-loss surgery if your BMI is 30 to 34 and you have serious weight-related health problems.
What should I expect during my consultation with the surgeon?
During your consultation with the surgeon you will discuss your expectations and potential results. He will go through your medical history and test results with you to ensure your suitability for the procedure. After clearly explaining how VASER Liposuction and fat transfer are performed he will physically examine you and draw very detailed markings on your treatment areas. The markings will be unique to your body and they will define precisely where your surgeon is going to perform VASER Liposuction and fat transfer. You will then be given information about your post-op recovery and be prepared for your surgery.

How long downtime do I need to recover?
The duration of your recovery depends on how your body heals, your lifestyle and how thoroughly you follow the aftercare guidelines given to you by your surgeon. Although everyone’s body recovers differently, final results can generally be seen around 6 months after the surgery. Most patients are back to their “normal selves” in about a week or less (similar to gallbladder surgery). However, if possible, we suggest patients take 2-4 weeks off from work to focus on adjusting to their new stomach and lifestyle.
When can I expect to return to work?
It depends on the type of job you do. Normally, you can return to work within 14 days if your job is sedentary. For more active jobs we recommend taking 3 weeks off work. Don’t forget that you can’t sit down on your buttocks for 2 weeks following BBL surgery without using your BBL pillow.
When can I expect to see my results?
Some patients may see results immediately, but most will start seeing their results 6-8 weeks after the procedure once the swelling has subsided. However, it can take up to 6 months to 1 year to achieve the final result.
Will I have any scars?
The surgery is performed laparoscopically and typically involves 5 tiny incisions. 4 of these incisions are about 5mm (the width of a pea). One of the incisions is approximately 15mm (less than the width of a loonie ).
